The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
