Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
